Join the Read-A-Book,
Get-A-Book Program
as a Rotary Reader!

Make a difference in a child’s life by volunteering as a Rotary Reader at Lillington-Shawtown Elementary School for the 2024-25 school year. Your time and effort can help young students develop a lifelong love of reading and learning.

What does it mean to be a Rotary Reader?

As a Rotary Reader, you will be paired with one or two students for 30 minutes, once a week, for 10 weeks. You’ll meet with them on a set day and time each week to help them improve their reading skills. We ask for a 10-week commitment to ensure consistency and progress.

What will you do?

  • Support and Guide: Students will be assigned books at their reading level by the school while you will provide guidance as they progress over the 10-week period.
  • Listen and Encourage: Listen as students read aloud, help them with challenging vocabulary, and work with them to improve their understanding of the text.
  • Read Together: You’ll also read the “next” book with your students, fostering their enthusiasm for reading and helping them build their vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.

How to Get Started:

  1. Register as a Reading Buddy: Visit the Harnett County Schools Volunteer website at https://www.harnettvolunteers.com/ to sign up before the Fall 2024 or Spring 2025 term begins.
  2. Contact Us: After registration and once the school year starts, reach out to Amber Anderson to schedule your weekly reading sessions.

Your commitment as a Rotary Reader can have a lasting impact on a child’s education. Join us in making a difference—one book, one student, one session at a time.
